As it becomes closer to delivering your baby in the third trimester, mothers should be extra vigilant about the babies movements. Also be alert for any discharges from the vagina or bleeding from the vagina. Your doctor will check whether the baby’s growth is satisfactory and baby is in good health.
Baby’s Development
Your baby is on his or her way to being fully developed this trimester! Your baby will usually be lying head down in preparation for birth. The baby is 240 mm from head to bottom.
Changes to your body
Due to the increase in the size of the abdomen, many women start feeling very heavy and bloated. Following are some minor ailments that are felt this trimester;
- Headaches
- Heartburn
- Backache
- Constipation
- Salivation
- Swelling in legs, hands and face
- Vericose veins
- Abdominal disention
Braxton hicks contractions are more evident this trimester and fetal movements become more easily felt. During the third trimester it is likely that the breast will secrete colestrum, also breasts will have pigmentation. Further darkening of the skin is also prevelant.
Tips for the third trimester
- Breast discomfort – Wearing cotton bras will help in case of leaking
- Treating headaches – Using paracetamol will not effect the baby, however if you have a history of migrains consult your doctor before continuing your medicine
- Healthy diet – Take care that you eat a healthy balanced diet, and include fibre and fruits to avoid constipation
- Skin care – there are certain products that should not be used during pregnancy. Therefore it is always best to consult your doctor if you want to treat your skin for pigmentation or acne
- Clothing – Wearing lose fitting clothes will help this trimester, and its is best to avoid high heel shoes and wearing belts around the waist
- Medicines – Take the recommended vitamins prescribed by your doctor
- Don’t miss your scheduled doctor appointements
- Labour signs – Keep track of any signs that you might be in labour
