Pregnancy – Week 27

Baby’s Developments

This is the last week of the second trimester and your baby measures about 9.8 inches head to toe and weighs about 1 kg now, and looks a lot like what it would look like at birth except a little thinner and shorter. The foetus will be sleeping and waking at consistent intervals and the lungs, liver and immune system are formed to a great extent which means that if your baby was to be born now, it would have a chance of surviving with very good medical care.

Changes in the Mother

Some women, at this stage and later on, feel a prickly and jittery feeling to their legs, especially when lying down at night. This is called Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). Tell your doctor about it. There is a good possibility it is harmless, in which case some yoga may help. But sometimes RLS is a symptom of iron deficiency anaemia or an allergy to certain foods, in which case you need medical advice.

Tips for This Week

Now may be a good time to start leisurely baby proofing your home so that you will not have to be stressed out and do it in a rush closer to birth or afterwards.

  • Cover electrical outlets
  • Remove objects that the baby may choke upon
  • Block off staircases
  • Secure heavy furniture to the wall so that a toddler will not be able to make such furniture topple on to them and injure them
