Baby’s Developments
The foetus is growing fast now and the nostrils, which have been blocked up to now, start to open up and the baby starts ‘breathing in’ amniotic fluid as practice for breathing after birth. During this week, blood vessels will develop in the lungs, bringing them closer and closer to full maturity. The vocal chords too are developing and preparing to cry.
Changes in the Mother
You may go through the very unpleasant experience of haemorrhoids (or piles) during this stage. These are varicose veins in your rectum and are caused by the enlarging of the uterus, as well as increased blood flow to the veins in your rectum causing them to swell and itch. Constipation makes the situation much worse. While haemorrhoids are not dangerous, they can be extremely painful so drink lots of water and do some pelvic floor exercises (also known as Kegel exercises) regularly. Also make sure that you keep your rectal area very clean.
Another thing you have to be mindful about is dental health. Studies have shown that there is a clear link between good dental health and longer pregnancies with fewer complications. So make sure you brush your teeth twice a day, especially in the night when your mouth becomes a breeding ground for bacteria since it is closed and dry.
One good thing is that you will have a full head of hair. This is because of hormones that prevent your body from shedding the hair. A lot of this extra hair will fall out once you give birth.
