More the attention, more the myths revolve around this. Your elders, friends, neighbours will say many things about it. However, is there a truth in these?
Just to list a few such common myths in Sri Lanka, surrounding pregnancy.
Myth: If the mother turns beautiful during pregnancy – It is a sign of a baby-girl
Some look at the mother and try to predict the gender of the baby. They predict a baby-girl, if the mother becomes beautiful during pregnancy, and if otherwise a baby-boy can be predicted. Especially, if certain parts of the pregnant mother’s body turn dark, such as the neck area, a baby-boy is predicted.
Fact:
Average Sri Lankans are generally black or brown. When a woman is pregnant the darkening hormone called melanocyte stimulating hormones levels increases. Because of that, she may get darker skin in the armpits, groin area, below the naval, up to the hairline, around the neck or eyes, or faces. At the same time because of retention of fluid in the body leads to puffed up appearance. This is a normal thing. One cannot predict the sex of the baby by this sort of changes.
Myth: A large tummy – a sign of a baby-girl
The size and the shape of the belly are also used to predict the gender of the baby. If the mother has a large belly, the prediction is for a baby- girl. A baby boy is predicted, if the belly is small. Size and the shape of the belly, however, do not have any link with the gender of the baby.
Fact:
If the tummy is bigger one may have to exclude twin pregnancies diabetes of the mother or increased fluid levels around the baby in the womb. If these things are, excluded one cannot predict whether the size of the tummy, will lead to a boy a girl. Generally, baby boys are heavier than girls are. However, there are exceptions to the rule. Furthermore, the size and direction of the belly can change based on the body structure of the mother and the position of the baby.
Myth: The food taken determines the skin colour of the baby
Any mother would love to have a fair cutie. Traditionally, it says that if you take certain foods, it can change the skin tone of the baby.
Fact:
It is important to know that skin tone is genetic. It cannot be determined by the food you take. The colour of the baby will depend on the genetic composition that will be contributed from the mother and father or their grandparents. Instead of taking food to make you baby fair, take food rich with nutrients to make your baby healthy. Healthy babies naturally have a healthy skin that looks nice and bright.
Myth: Now that you are pregnant, you can eat for two
You may have heard you elders asking you to eat for two since you are pregnant. This, however, does not have any base.
Fact:
It is important to eat more because you need more nutrients for the healthy growth of your fetus. If your wish is a healthy baby, having a diet full of necessary nutrients is extremely important during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor, get advice on your diet, and make sure you take essential nutrients in right quantities daily.
Myth: You should not work more when you are pregnant
Pregnant mothers are mostly freed from their normal day-to-day heavy work due to pregnancy. It says that heavy activities are not good during this period.
Fact:
The baby’s growth and the weight will be determined by the mother’s general health status, nutrition, and the body size of the father and mother. If the mother is doing extremely heavy work like manual labourer who is a poor woman, who does not have enough nutritious food, tend to have small babies, anyway. The small babies are healthy and they will catch up growth after birth. In certain cases you may have to avoid certain activities, but not all. Therefore, you should try to spend a normal life as much as possible doing routine things that you used to do. You can talk to your doctor before deciding.
Myth: Dola Duka
In addition to afore mentioned, there are some commonly known signs during pregnancy. Morning symptoms, Preference for certain foods (Dola Duka) and Repugnance towards food cooked by self are prominent among them. These also can vary from person to person. Some will get it, some will not. The same mother will experience it for one child and not for the other child. Therefore, you should not get pre-occupied with these and scare yourself.
Fact:
Pregnancy craving and pica is an unusual psychological expression due to hormones and socio cultural reasons. Some women will not like some smells. Even they will not like husbands coming closer to them. Some women get the craving to eat sour foods or exceptional they will eat starch clay and some other odd items. This again will disappear and nothing to be frowned upon.
The only option to avoid unwanted confusions and disappointments during pregnancy is to depend on a reliable person like your doctor for advice. Today the technology is very advanced and doctors can predict many things accurately, including the gender of the baby. Consult your doctor all the time to clear any doubts you have about pregnancy. This will make your life a lot easier and help enjoy your pregnancy days and motherhood later on.

We all know how to have sex in order to conceive. If a couple is having trouble conceiving there are enough and more help out there to work on this problem. BabySpace in previous articles have written about where to start and where to find help in Sri Lanka in order to concieve. But, there is very little talk about having sex during a pregnancy. This could be due to the social stigma of our country but lesser and lesser women come out to talk about it.
So the BabySpace decided to break the ice! In this article we will be looking at several questions that several mothers-to-be we spoke to asked from us. If we fail to answer a question you have leave a comment or share an experience that will help other mothers-to-be.
Is sex during pregnancy really safe?
This could be a clichéd question but should not be disregarded. Yes, it is quite safe given that you are having a normal pregnancy proceeding without any complications. If you are not having health issues then you can have sex until your baby is born. But many would not have a ‘sexual appetite’ most often and probably will try to avoid it, which is perfectly fine too.
Lack of enthusiasm for sex is mostly caused by fatigue, morning sickness, hormonal fluctuations and back pain. If you feel that you don’t want to have sex talk to your partner and explain to him why you choose to avoid sex. This will help the two of you advance with a good understanding about each other.
So will sex during a pregnancy cause miscarriages or will it harm my baby? Miscarriages, unfortunately, is inevitable. However having sex will not cause any harm to your pregnancy. In fact having sex is quite healthy to both your partner and you. You may feel the contractions during orgasm a little more strongly and this is because when a woman is pregnant her uterus gets swollen and there is an increase in blood flow causing intensity in orgasms. Don’t worry about this affecting your unborn baby because it is well protected in amniotic fluid sap in the uterus and is enfolded by the muscles of the uterus.
When is having sex during pregnancy risky?
There are several instances where you should avoid sex and the most important is obviously, if your doctor have advised against it. The other reasons include:
Also, if you are engaging in oral sex advice your partner not to blow into the vagina as it may cause a blockage of blood vessels due to air bubbles. This could be harmful to both the baby and the mother.
Best sex positions to adopt when you are pregnant
Spooning
Spooning, where the male partner lies with the female partner in front, both facing the same direction. It is like a cuddle and also a very comfy way to have sex during a pregnancy. This is a very safe method because when spooning there is less or no pressure to the abdomen. It allows enough movement.
Sitting on a chair or bed
Let your partner sit on the chair or bed and sit on his lap facing away from him. This will aid to a smooth intercourse and keep the belly totally out of the way and you can be in control. Try this if you experience little cramps when you are having sex. If cramps persist, however, see your doctor.
At the edge of the bed
While lying at the edge or corner of the bed have your partner to kneel or stand on the floor. You can bend your knees and rest both feet of the bed or even lie of the bed. This way he will not put all his weight of you and will be less uncomfortable.
On hands and knees
We will advise you not to do this on your third trimester. By lying on the hands and knees while your partner penetrates from behind will help you both to enjoy the time.
Standing against the wall
This can be achieved by standing in front of a wall with legs spread and arms stretched to support yourself by resting your palms on the wall.
Of course, when you are in your early pregnancy period you can have sex in any position you wish to. But when you are over 15 weeks try to avoid positions where you have to lie directly on your belly or flat on your back because the uterus which has grown will exert pressure on your aorta. This will block the blood flow to the placenta. If you do have to lie on the back keep a soft pillow directly under you hip for support.
What will I feel after having sex during pregnancy?
Like we discussed before you will feel strong orgasms or contractions in your uterus. You will also feel intense fetal activity after the orgasms. Sometimes these feelings can proceed for half an hour at a time. At first this may worry you but rest assured this is perfectly normal and you’ll get used to it after some time.
Sometimes you may even experience a little blood, especially during your third trimester. This is normal too but if it does worry you consult your doctor for further advice.
Do not push yourself to have sex and feel sad if you do not have a sexual appetite during your pregnancy. Not all women get a sexual feeling at this time and once your baby is born you will have a normal sexual life as before. Always share your feelings with your partner. Remember that both of you are in this together.

Many couples face the issue when trying to conceive a few years after delivering their first baby. The reasons were unclear and often thought to be psychological. However, the reasons could be physical, psychological or simply beyond the couple’s control.
What is secondary infertility?
Secondary infertility is a term used to describe the failure to conceive a baby even after delivering one or more children before. Most often secondary infertility is not easy to cope with, as couples try for another baby when they feel that an addition of another member of the family makes it whole. This is when, like in Rada’s case, many couples seek psychological help to contend with their emotional distress.
However, secondary infertility is not rare. Statistics show that in Sri Lanka around 10 percent of the couples are infertile and there is a 50 percent chance that the cause is from the man’s side while one-third percent lies on the woman.
What causes secondary infertility?
There could be a number of reasons for secondary infertility. Listed below are some of the most common causes that reproductive endocrinologist and urologists have come across.
Age factor: Unsurprisingly when a woman tries to conceive during the advanced reproductive age secondary infertility is common. This is caused when the egg quality and it’s health is reduced with age. So, even if she was able to successfully conceive in the past if she has passed the healthy age of conceiving it can be infertile.
Unhealthy sperms: When a couple goes to see a specialist about their infertility one of the primary tests that is done is a sperm analysis. This is because just like the eggs sperms can reduce it’s quality over time due to age, health issues and intake of various substances. Also, an obstruction in the tube that transports sperms could cause infertility.
Pelvic adhesion and other complications: This may sound quite alien but pelvic adhesion occurs when complications in the structure of the womb can cause difficulty for the fallopian tube to absorb the egg. Most often these complications happen due to previous surgeries. Other complications that could take place are uterine infections due to a previous delivery.
Smoking: You might have expected this one. Over the years studies have proved that smoking by both partners can cause infertility. Smoking could also cause complications even after a woman conceives.
Putting on the pounds: It is always a good thing to stay fit and staying fit will increase your chances to conceive. Weight gain most often leads to ovulatory dysfunction. In women weight gain increases the production of testosterone in the ovaries causing infertility while in men it leads to elevation of estrogen levels which again can lead to the same affect.
What to expect if your partner and you have problems conceiving another baby?
Like we discussed before secondary infertility can be emotionally hard to cope with. In most cases we came across, also in Rada’s, we found that couples experience pressure to a certain extent, especially when they conceived a first time easily be it planned or accidental. They would also feel guilty and blame themselves for their past actions such as eating unhealthy food. In many other cases, couples would stress about getting too old to be a parent.
How can you cope?
All the above reasons can lead to isolation of the couples. They would prefer to stay away from family functions in hopes of avoiding questions their friends or relatives ask about their issue. If you are under pressures of secondary infertility you would need someone or a group of persons to back you up throughout the process and help you accept the results that you get at the end.
If you or a person you know have trouble conceiving a baby try to form a help group of the persons that you trust and will help. You can also see a counselor to help you cope more effectively.
Is there no hope?
Of course, there is a number of things that you can try. If you still find it impossible to conceive after a year of unprotected and well times intercourse you are having secondary infertility. If this is the case it is high time you visit a specialist to help you try alternative methods.
Over the years treatment for infertility has improved and most recommended treatments that are available today are listed below.
Infertility drugs: The first option that most infertile couples try in Sri Lanka are medications that are taken orally that will help stimulate the ovarian or injected to help increase the number and the quality of eggs.
For the sperm: If the course of the infertility is related to the sperm your specialist will give a intrauterine insemination (IUI) where the physician would introduce the sperm into the female partner’s uterus medicinally.
Conception: If the eggs are healthy the specialists will next look for best ways of fermenting them. This could be by normal intercourse, intrauterine insemination or in vitro fermentation or what you call a test tube baby. Following careful analysis of the womb specialists would pick the best option.
Outside help: Donation of eggs is another option that is available if your ovarian reserve is damaged and is impossible to conceive a baby.
However, another aspect that you should keep in mind is that treatments are not always successful. You should keep an open mind and be ready to accept whatever the results could be.
In case you fail to conceive at all remember that you can make the best of it with the child or children that you already have. Go to the family functions and interact with your friends. Choose a healthy diet and exercise well to keep your mind relaxed.
During secondary infertility, both partners suffer equally. You can stay strong and help your partner to bounce back too. Make your sex life fun and interesting and not make it a chore to only be pregnant.
If you know better ways of coping with secondary infertility don’t forget to leave a comment below to help other mothers in their difficulty.

During our grandparents’ times and in most cases our parents’ times the women used to stay at home and when they are pregnant would not stress themselves too much. Now over the years this has changed. We see more and more Sri Lankan women opting to go to work, even during their pregnancies. However carrying out day to day life can get stressful and trying to keep up with the normal routine could in some instances lead to additional stress and anxiety.
We are not encouraging moms-to-be to stay back at home instead of doing the jobs that they much prefer to do. In this article we hope to introduce a few easy and fun stress releasing techniques that you can adopt into your life to make pregnancy a journey full of pleasant experiences and not a battle you should fight.
Is stress bad? Will it affect my baby?
This is one of the questions that were asked by mothers who visit the BabySpace. But you needn’t worry because being a stressed or a little restless is normal when you are pregnant. Even if you had a stressful time you can deliver a healthy baby.
However if you are stressed almost all the time and feel irritated by every single thing then you do have a problem that requires immediate attention. Specialists say that recurring anxious feelings can affect you baby due to the the secretion of stress hormone that can cause damages to the emotional development of your baby.
Yet, some mothers can bounce back from a stressful period more easily than others. If you are one that falls to the latter group do not worry because there are numerous ways to keep yourself calm and anxiety free. Listed below are some of these relaxation methods that can help you cope with stress better.
1. Having a healthy diet
Food play an important role in keeping your stress levels at bay. You have to identify what you should eat and should not. If you have an allergic reaction to any food try to avoid it during your pregnancy. Omega-3 can help you keep your mind and body healthy. This essential fatty acid is found in fish products. Add a piece of fish into your diet to help you feel better.
Also try eating fruits and green vegetables that has plenty of vitamin and mineral. This, like fatty acids, will boost your bodily ability to fight stress.
Adding a food items such as eggs, yoghurt, chicken and cheese will help you get sufficient amino acid tryptophan that can also help to be stress-less and healthy.
In addition to these food products you should also have enough water to keep your body hydrated all the time. This will purify you blood and encourage a good flow that can help you calm down.
2. Few minutes of deep breathing
You will be surprised to see how easily you can fight stress by just five minutes of deep breathing or meditation. There is many ways you can do this simple exercise. One of the most common ways is to take a deep breath, hold it and count up to ten and breathing out slowly and lightly. Keep up a rhythmic space and continue for five minutes.
3. Guided imagery
This is yet another way of meditating. The best thing about this technique is that like deep breathing you can do this in your office or when you go for a tea break. To do this first you have to sit in a relaxing position, close you eyes and breath rhythmically. Then guide you imagination to a place that you will be happy in. This could be at your grandmother’s house, near a lake or watching the sunset at the beach. Imagine that you are there and listen to the breaking of the waves, feel the breeze in your face until you are relaxed. This technique will take you from ten minutes to thirty but the results are just amazing.
4. Do a bit of gentle exercises
You can relax better with a few minutes of exercises. You could do some simple stretching exercises or yoga to help you boost both mental and physical health. Even a walk in the garden is a good way of relaxing and having a good intake of fresh air. Swimming is also a good exercise that will help you keep yourself concentrated and help you get enough stamina.
5. Muscle relaxation
This is another technique that you can adopt anywhere you are. Muscle relaxation will help you get rid of the tension and help your body to relax better. To start this relaxation technique sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes. When breathing in slowly and softly tense the muscles in you forehead and release it. Follow the same technique in sequence in different parts of your body. Doing muscle relaxation daily will also help you to have a easy pregnancy.
6. Visit your loved ones
When you are pregnant and working you will be occupied with a number of chores that keep you busy. But paying a visit to your parents or a close friend help you take your mind off and having a some girl time. Being happy and laughing will help you keep yourself emotionally healthy.
7. Make special plans with your partner
Even if you are living with your partner doing something special will help you both de-stress yourself. Make reservations at your favourite restaurant or go for a movie and have some alone time with your partner . This will strengthen your relationship and help to tackle any problems without over burdening yourself.
8. Spend time with your baby and sleep well
Even if your baby is still to see the world you can spend some alone time with it. When at home relax on your bed and communicate with your unborn baby. Talk to it about what you did or how happy you are to have a baby.
This way you can also focus on your stresses and try to overcome it yourself. If you are tired get enough sleep.
Most of all if you feel that you need a break take time off from work. A peaceful mind and relaxed body van help your baby to be healthy as it can be.
]]>The baby can be felt moving during the second trimester, this is referred to as ‘quickening’. It is important to remember the day you first felt the baby moving because it gives and idea of the week of pregnancy and baby’s wellbeing. It is usually felt around the 18th to 20th week of pregnancy.

It is important to opt for other planned methods as Emergency Contraceptive Pills have increased concentration of hormones.
There are several methods of emergency contraception. One of the most popular and easy to use method is use of pills containing a substance called levonorgestral. This substance is available in Sri Lanka today. If the woman is breast feeding the advice of the family doctor needs to be taken before using these tablets. If one has any doubt or unable to find a suitable method of emergency contraception the family doctor/general practitioner should be consulted.
Permanent Methods
Male (Vasectomy) and Female Sterilization via surgery is an option when the ideal Family Size is achieved. Vasectomy for Males and Ligation and Resection of Tubes for Females(LRT) are the Clinical Terms for Sterilization. Sterilization for females is undertaken in the Government Health Care Sector only for females with Families with 2 or more children above the age of 5 years.
There is a wide range of contraceptives available in Sri Lanka. It is always advisable to consult a General Practitioner or a Family Planning Advisor before the selection of any of the more long term contraceptive methods.

It is the dream of all married couples to have a baby of their own. To see the little one grow under their protection, to be there when he or she comes across a barrier in life and to witness each success will bring immense happiness that cannot be measured.
However not all of us can conceive a child due to various medical conditions. Yet, this limitation should not come in the way of having our dream come true.
Under the adoption act of Sri Lanka a married couple can adopt a child anytime they wish.
Read the rules the Registrar’s General Department states on adoption of a child.
But what are the requirements that should be fulfilled to adopt a child? What should an adopting parent do? Can a couple chose the child they wish to adopt? There could be numerous questions popping into your mind regarding this subject.
Unfortunately the information you are seeking is not freely available online. Therefore following several requests made by our readers the BabySpace paid a visit to the Department and Child Care Services of Sri Lanka to seek answers to all those questions.
Firstly it is important that you understand your needs, communicate with your partner and come to a mutual agreement regarding this step that is going to transform both your lives. Explore all areas of concern; pay your family obstetrician a visit to see if you have a chance of conceiving a child.
If the chances are stale and you are ready to adopt a child you can start by making a written request to the Probation Department and Child Care Services (the address is given below).
“Adopting parents should be 60 years and below. This criterion is essential because we ensure that the parents are ready and able to bring up a child. If it is a young married couple we request for medical reports from a doctor to see if they really cannot conceive a baby,” said an official at the department.
She said that in case the couple can make a child their request can be rejected. In addition to this parents who already have a child will not be eligible to adopt one, unless in special and isolated occasions.
Following this the couple should declare their income to the department to show that they are in a position to bring up a child. The income should be sufficient to provide the adopted child education, medical requirements and other needs.
To ensure that the details provided are in fact the truth and to guarantee that the adopting couple can look after a child a probation officer will be sent to their area of residence.
“This officer will obtain all details regarding the family. They will question the neighbors and other government officers in the area to obtain a clear picture regarding them. This is done to make sure that the child we provide will have a good home to grow in,” the official added.
If the information gathered by the probation officer is positive the couple will be called for an interview and provided with a license to adopt a child of their liking. This license is valid for a period of three years. The child should be adopted within this time period.
A name list and other details of children available for adoption will be provided to the couple. The children are generally 12 years and below. They can select a child, obtain his or her medical details and even have a meeting to understand if both parties are ready to be a family.
Then the department will have a second interview where they will give marks to the new family-to-be. If you pass this you can build your dream life from henceforth.
Of course it is not a simple decision to make and an easy procedure to follow to adopt a child. But there are hundreds of couples requesting children from the department and thousands of families in Sri Lanka where married couples have brought up an adopted child.
In addition to this there are a number of homes where children who are given for adoption are boarded in. One such place is The Salvation Army in Sri Lanka which was introduced to the country by Captain William Gladwin in 1883. It is a registered evangelical church that mainly focuses on social work. Their children can be adopted by foreign parents too.
The Salvation Army has children for adoption from the age of three months to five years. According to Major Soma Wedage, a compassionate member of the organization there are babies who are less than two months too.
She said that the children there are generally orphaned by birth, children of unmarried mothers or of couples who are willing to give their child to a good and supportive family. In addition to this the couple who is to adopt a child should be below 50 years in age and having a substantial income to provide to the needs of the baby adopted.
She explained that a child needs to be adopted according to the Sri Lanka law legally and this also applies for international law as well.
